MI agent among three kidnapped from NWFP CM’s town

Staff Report

BANNU: Suspected tribal militants kidnapped three government officials, including a Military Intelligence agent, on Wednesday from Bannu, the hometown of NWFP Chief Minister Akram Durrani, police said.

“We are searching for the MI official and two other provincial government department personnel,” Munawwar Khan, police official at Dumal police station near Bannu, told Daily Times.

MI Naib Subedar Hasan Zeb, Christian Hospital contractor Younas Masih and driver Akhtar Niaz were kidnapped on the Bannu-Kohat highway near Dumal at 6:00am.

The kidnappers later allowed the contractor and the driver to go but kept the MI agent with them and took him to a secret location, government sources said on condition of anonymity.

Intelligence personnel have been frequent targets of foreign militants and their local supports and so far more than half a dozen have been killed. In Dumal police station jurisdiction, two officials of the Communication and Works Department were kidnapped at 1:00pm.

The kidnapping of the three officials comes as nine government officials were released three days after they were abducted on May 19 in North Waziristan.

The Dumal region of Bannu district is inhabited mostly by Wazir tribes and kidnapping for ransom and car-snatching are common in the area. The growing lawlessness has raised concern that the region is slipping completely into the hands of militants and the state’s writ does not exist.
